My experiences of ghosts are true, but let's face it, they are subjective events. Just as no one can convince me that ghosts do not exist, I cannot persuade anyone that they do. Whether you believe in ghosts, or not, is your decision. Above all, explore and think for yourself!

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS?

Top

Page Contents

I believe in ghosts. Over time, I have concluded that we are not human beings attempting to be spiritual, but spiritual beings trying to be human.

We are uncomfortable with our bodies and fascinated by ghost stories. The author C.S. Lewis believed that these two facts proved we were spirits in human form. If I accept the idea of an afterlife, and I do, how can I not believe in ghosts?

DID YOU KNOW...

* Ghosts are the souls of dead people who have remained on earth and chosen not to go to the other side. They may or may not know that they are dead. Each ghost has reasons for choosing to stay here and each one of them is as individual and varied as the people we know in life. Any deep emotional trauma can be the basis for a haunting.

* A spirit is a soul that has crossed over to the other side with full knowledge of the transition. A spirit can visit earth, often to help us, but always returns home. Spirits are not stuck here, ghosts are.

* The presence of a spirit may comfort or inform us but we are often afraid of ghosts.

* Ghosts can feel our fear and will grow stronger because of it. If you feel fear in the presence of a ghost, say a prayer of peace and protection according to your spiritual tradition. Tell the ghost to stop and back off now. Do not give your power away.

* Children and animals see ghosts easier than adults because their intellect isn't telling them ghosts are imaginary.

* Some ghosts are stuck on this side because of regret. It is much better for us to forgive and make amends now so that we don't share the same fate.

* The more fuss you make about ghosts, the more ghosts you'll attract. See more about portals under To Ouija or Not To Ouija.

* Always rule out logical explanations of events first. Is the attic haunted or is it full of squirrels? Is the electrical system being manipulated by ghosts, or does the wiring need to be grounded? Could the shadows be caused by moonlight crossing moss-draped trees or are you seeing an apparition?

* Your house may be haunted if: Pets react to something others can't see; people in the house are having nightmares; objects are misplaced and returned without explanation; electrical applicances turn themselves on and off; you feel unexplained cold drafts; doors open and slam shut at will; you hear footsteps or raps on the wall when no one is there.

* Ghosts can appear anywhere in houses, but the most common places are: Peering out of windows; on staircases; in hallways; perched on chairs; in mirrors.

* You may be seeing a ghost if: The figure is unusually pale; you glance away and the figure is gone when you look back; you see the figure out of the corner of your eye and when you look directly at it, nothing is there.

* Do not dismiss your child's report of ghosts, but consider all possibilities. Young children may actually be suffering from a sleep disorder called night terrors. Night terrors occur when there is an abrupt arousal from slow-wave sleep, resulting in terrifying screams. Children can look awake when they are not, and may become violent, or unknowingly put themselves in harm's way. Children most often do not remember the episode. Please consult a physician if you think your child is suffering from this sleep disorder.

TO OUIJA OR NOT TO OUIJA

Top

Page Contents

Ouija comes from the French word 'oui' meaning yes, and the German word 'ja', also meaning yes. For some, the yes-yes board is a big no-no. Although the boards are sold in toy stores, most paranormal experts insist that they are not toys. One thing is certain, ouija boards are controversial. Opinions range from ouija boards are dangerous to ouija boards are nonsense.

Portals are openings from our world into the spirit world. Other words for portal are vortex and doorway. The most common way to create one of these portals, or doorways, is to work with ouija boards because they invite spirit communication, as do seances.

Ghostbuster Echo Bodine cautions, "The problem with opening ourselves up to the spirit world without knowing what we are doing is that we attract all kinds of souls to us that may not be so favorable...This is nothing to mess with." (Relax, It's Only a Ghost, page 86.)

As with seances, another topic of controversy, ouija boards may actually recharge a ghost, making its appearance more frequent. Other opinions include: Portals opened with ouija boards are almost impossible to close; ouija boards invite disturbed spirits from the lower astral plane; ouija boards are meaningless because we direct the movement of the planchette with our own muscle and skin responses; and the ouija board simply gives our subconscious mind permission to come through.

My advice? If you suspect a portal in your home, ask the Universe to close it up. Please read all you can about psychic protection, seances and the use of ouija boards. Become an informed consumer. Then decide for yourself--to ouija or not to ouija.

One final word of caution: Alcohol and recreational drugs lower mind control, diminish intellect, impair judgement, and make the entry of unwanted spirits easier. Please be careful.

GHOSTBUSTING

Top

Page Contents

You do not need to see or hear ghosts to rid them from your home, but do remember that ghosts are stuck and need to move on. Be firm and unafraid. Ghosts become powerful around us only if we give our power to them.

There are as many opinions on how to clear ghosts as there are about ouija boards and I am not a professional ghostbuster. I offer a simple method of clearing your home of unwanted ghosts as a handy tool to use with care, should the need arise, because it has worked for me.

My method of clearing is uncomplicated, but please read a lot about ghostbusting and make choices accordingly. Refer to the Bibliography for suggested authors.

To clear your home of unwanted ghosts, first say a prayer of protection according to your spiritual tradition. Go to the room, or place, where you most feel the ghost's presence, or where there has been the most activity. If you have more than one ghost, which is common, do a clearing for each one.

Ghosts have no concept of time. Tell the ghost out loud that it is 2008 (or current year) and it is time to go home. Ask the ghost to turn towards the light and look for greeters from the other side. Reassure the ghost that the greeters will help with the transition.

Visualize a strong white light filling the room or place. While you visualize, ask the God or Goddess to help this lost soul to release its hold on earth so that it may continue the soul's journey. Ask the angels and spirit guides to help this lost soul home.

Wait a few minutes as you continue to visualize white light filling the room. You may, or may not, feel a subtle shift in the energy of the room. Opinions vary on what to do next. I burn sandalwood incense, others open a window to release negative energy and burn sage.

When you are finished with the incense or sage, ask the God or Goddess of your understanding to please seal your house with a white protective light from top to bottom. Visualize this strong summerlike light as you pray, and hold it in your mind's eye until the house or place feels filled with light. You may need to repeat this visualization several times over a few weeks in order to persuade your unwanted ghost to let go and leave.

Finally, to avoid wishing the ghost back, refrain from talking about it for a while. If you do discuss it, talk only in terms of the ghost being gone, happy and safe on the other side.

EERIE EXTRAS:
A Catchall

Top

Page Contents

The following bits and pieces didn't seem to fit anywhere else, so I created a catchall for them. Because I have an editorial staff of one, some of what follows is only my opinion. Take it for what it is worth to you and always think for yourself. Here goes:

* Much has been written about communicating with deceased loved ones, and I am not going to try to cover the topic in any detail on this page. Either refer to the Bibliography for suggested authors, or click on After-Death Communication from the Grief Healing link at the bottom of this page.

* Briefly, communication with deceased loved ones cannot be forced. Obsession will only block your attempt. Relax and let go. Don't complicate the process. Messages will come in simple forms, like a familiar smell or a loving thought, and little things do mean something. There are no coincidences.

* Not all psychics can communicate with souls on the other side, and not all people who call themselves psychics are on spiritual paths. Most psychics sincerely want to help you, but I suggest that you go to a psychic for spirit communication only if that psychic has been recommended to you by someone you know. If you are grieving the death of a loved one, you are vulnerable and fragile, and sadly, there are people who will prey upon your vulnerability. Please take care of yourself.

* Do demons exist? Some believe they do. I believe evil is the absence of good. There are hateful people on earth who have no morals, conscience, or desire for good. Our soul personalities in death are very much the same as they were in life. For a ghost to be evil, it had to be that way in this life.

* There is a universal law of "like attracts like." Ghosts and spirits who are around us will usually be very much like us; therefore, while some ghosts can be negative, few will actually be evil--unless you go hunting for them, or invite them into your life. Refer to the section about ouija boards.

* I believe that the spirit is the essence of who we are in this life and we retain that essence in the next. Because we are pure energy in spirit form when we cross over, we are no longer encumbered with the physical ailments of our bodies. I'd like to believe we are more mellow on the other side because our perspectives change. I can also hope we have learned wisdom through our earthly school of life lessons. And you know what? We all get to find out someday...

GHOST STORIES

Top

Page Contents

My experiences with ghosts that follow are true in that they happened to me, but I do not have objective proof. I'll let you decide.

A psychic once told me that I am “clairsentient.” I don’t actually “see ghosts” in a physical way, but rather, I sense them with some inner mechanism. I can often hear them, too. In my mind’s eye I sometimes get a detailed picture, but most often I just feel or hear a presence.

I have been to New Orleans, Charlottesville, North Carolina, Salem, Massachusetts, Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC, and the Perrysville battlefield in Kentucky. I have also stayed at The Buxton Inn, a haunted hotel in my home county.

While some may take a ghost tour for a good fright, I go to haunted places because I want to understand the strange and eerie sensations I get every time I do. I am not scared, but rather apprehensive. It is an odd feeling that is unique to my experience of the paranormal.

I have learned not to question my particular sensitivity, but rather to accept it. The hardest part for me was learning to trust the sensation—when the hair on the back of my neck stands up, or I feel a chill deep within me, I know there is a paranormal presence nearby.

In all the cities listed above, I could feel the presence of ghosts. I have stronger feelings in some places such as battlefields or crime scenes. When the feeling is strongest, I can stand in a haunted area, ask a question, and receive an answer in my head.

Most of my encounters have been with spirits—entities that knew they were dead but chose to return to the earth plane for a beneficial reason. I am never afraid of a spirit. I believe my eerie sensations on battlefields and crime scenes were the results of either imprints (the residue of horrific emotional energy that is replayed like a hologram) or ghosts (able to interact, but stuck in a place because they didn’t know they were dead.)

A Note About New Orleans:

The French Quarter of New Orleans is often called the nation's most haunted place.(*) From Royal Street to Bourbon Street, ghosts abound. The stories range from the torture of slaves to a lover's betrayal. When I took the guided ghost tour, spirits seemed to lurk behind the elegant architecture. With the sudden deaths caused by Hurricane Katrina, I can only imagine that New Orleans will remain America's most haunted city for a long, long time. BACK

(*) The battlefield of Gettysburg is a strong rival for the title.

SPIRIT DOCTOR

Top

Page Contents

I had a close encounter with a spirit when I was working as a nurse in the recovery room at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. I was on call this particular weekend, meaning I was called for post-anesthesia recovery following any unscheduled weekend or night surgery.

A young woman had an emergency appendectomy. The period immediately following surgery was uneventful and all the staff went home except for me. It was about 2 AM and my patient and I were alone in the recovery room. I had given her pain medication through her IV and she was snoozing quite comfortably.

As I stood by her cart attending to vital signs, I saw a man out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in scrubs and he was watching me. He didn’t scare me, but I was surprised because I thought I was alone. I turned to say something to him and he was gone. An hour passed and it was time to transport my patient to a regular hospital floor for the night. I wanted to check her dressing one more time before I left the recovery suite.

I have rather large hands compared to the rest of me and there were no more disposable gloves in my size. The only ones left in the dispensers were too small. I looked around and couldn’t find any my size. Just as I resigned myself to squeezing my hands into an uncomfortable fit, a box of gloves flew off the top of the nearby supply cart. They were exactly my size. I heard footsteps in the hall, but when I ran out to look, all I saw at a distance was the man in scrubs walking away from me and then he simply vanished.

The next week, I told my fellow recovery room workers about the man in scrubs. One nurse replied, “Oh, him. He’s our resident ghost surgeon. He’s been here forever.” I learned that he helped people find things, especially at night when few staffers were around. He loved to slam equipment onto the floor, as he did with my gloves.

Another nurse told me that she was frantically looking on the storage shelves for a specific type of surgical instrument during a night emergency surgery and the instrument in question flew off the shelf onto the floor. She picked it up, sterilized it and got it to the surgeon just in time.

I also learned that new nurses, such as myself, were not told ahead of time about the ghost surgeon; but almost without exception, anyone who had spent time alone late at night in the operating room area had encounters with the helpful man in scrubs. Because of his beneficence, I feel he was a spirit, not a ghost.

MERLIN'S GIFT

Top

Page Contents

I believe that animals are spiritual perfection and I have no doubt that I will be reunited with my pets when I get to the other side. Merlin was a large majestic golden cat with a roaring purr. I found him when he was three weeks old and bottle-fed him through infancy.

A feral tom attacked him a few years later and I found him unconscious in the back yard. I held together his open bleeding neck while I waited on the kitchen floor for a home veterinary service to arrive. He had surgery and made a full recovery. We had a strong bond—not many people bottle-feed their pets, or have to put pressure on their pet’s jugular vein to keep him from bleeding to death.

Merlin slept with me every night of his life. He waited until I had settled in, and then jumped on the bed to position himself against my legs. He usually purred us to sleep. Years passed and he finally succumbed to renal disease at the age of sixteen.

On the night after his death, I got into bed thinking how much I would miss my dear Merlin. Soon I felt something jump on the bed and settle against my legs. I looked but saw nothing. And then I heard his booming purr. As I drifted towards sleep, I knew that Merlin had come back to let me know that he was OK. Not only was he OK—-but he would also be waiting for me to come Home.

HARBINGERS

Top

Page Contents

I have also experienced harbingers. According to ghost hunter and author Joshua P. Warren, a harbinger is a spirit from the future that carries a message to inform the observer of future events. In How To Hunt Ghosts (Simon and Schuster, 2003), Warren discusses nursing home harbingers that appear around a dying person when death is near. In my work as an RN on the night shift, I sensed the presence of harbingers and I will tell anyone that we never die alone.

Warren’s book validated my own experience with another kind of harbinger: one that prevents death or serious injury. My father taught me to ride horses. He stressed that if I were ever thrown from a horse, to take my feet out of the stirrups, let go of the reins and try to fall away from the horse. Being dragged, tangled or trampled is how most people are killed (or paralyzed) in horse-riding accidents. Dad died in 1994.

A few summers ago I went to a friend's farm to ride a new quarter horse. I didn’t get to know the horse well enough before I took her for a run, and I was thrown from her at full speed. In the split-second before I knew I was going off, I heard Dad’s voice shout, “Get your feet out of the stirrups, let go of the reins, and fall away from the horse, Christine!”

I did as ordered and off I flew, dislocating my shoulder. I had surgery and physical therapy and made a full recovery, but I know Dad’s voice saved me from being dragged to death. I am convinced that my dead father was a harbinger: he warned me, and saved me, from potential disaster.

SARAH

Top

Page Contents

In the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction category, I grew up on a large farm that was next to a very old cemetery. As a child, I would carry my doll dishes to the graveyard and have tea parties with my not-so-imaginary friends. (Hey, doesn't every child have tea parties in the cemetery?)

One grave especially attracted me because the energy felt sad and I sensed heat or flames. I would spread my doll dishes around the grave and engage in cheerful chatter. Time passed and I put away the things of childhood, but I did not forget. Years later, through historical research and talking with Sarah's descendants, I learned that the 13 year-old girl buried there had burned to death under mysterious circumstances in 1846.

I'll close the ghost story section with the chilling poem that is on her tall tombstone. Because the inscription is worn with time, some phrasing is not exact.(*) As you read the poem, contemplate the fact that a fire of unknown origin caused Sarah's death. Be warned, it may cause a goosebump or two.

Young people all as you pass by,
As you are now so once was I.
As I am now you soon will be,
Prepare for death and follow me.
My dust is smoldering back to dust,
My soul returned to God.
May those who read know soon they must
Lie cold beneath the sod.
Oh, Monster death why blast so soon,
The flower that just began to bloom?
But boast thou now well not complain,(*)
For Sarah soon shall rise again.
Then in that resurrection morn,
We all shall meet her in the sky.
From our cold graves dark and forlorn,
We’ll bask in scenes that never die.

(*) This line could read:
But boast thou now, we'll not complain

SOULFUL SIGNS:
A True Story of Redbirds

Top

Page Contents

My mother's death is a deep personal heartache. Mom left a folder labeled, "To be opened by my daughters after my funeral." In it, she had prepared two sympathy cards with personal messages for my sister and me. Yes, my mother gave sympathy cards to her daughters for her own death. She wanted her last message to us to be one of comfort and love.

Mom liked songbirds and especially cardinals. She called them "redbirds." She often wore a cardinal pin on her coat collar and gave my sister and me beautiful cardinal figurines surrounded with carnations, the State of Ohio bird and flower.

On the night after the funeral, my sister wanted me to take a flower arrangement home, but they were all loaded in her van. It was dark in the van, so I asked Mom to choose one for me and pulled out a small arrangement without getting a good look at it.

When I got it home I was disappointed that it was not pink because pink was Mom's favorite color. Instead it was a planter of red carnations with a little teddy bear wearing a red hat. I placed the planter next to the cardinal figurine that Mom had given me and marveled at how well they complemented each other. Pink would not have looked as striking with the cardinal.

I have back yard bird feeders that I enjoy watching from the kitchen. The next morning, after feeding the birds, I had the courage to open Mom's final card to me. I was overwhelmed that she would prepare a sympathy card for me to mourn her own death and I sank to the floor in tears.

As I pulled myself up by the kitchen counter, I looked out the back door window and saw a flock of cardinals surrounding my feeders. Cardinals are independent birds and do not fly in large groups. You will not see more than two or four together, but there were 50 to 100 "redbirds" in my back yard. I have never seen so many cardinals in one place. It was beautiful, like red jewels sparkling through a gray winter day, and I know they were a gift from Mom.

Soulful signs from our deceased loved ones are all around us if we look for them. Messages will come in simple forms, like a familiar smell or a loving thought, and little things do mean something. There are no coincidences. You may have to wait until the powerful emotions of acute grief subside for your loved one to get through, but welcome their presence when they do.

From Healing After Loss by Martha Whitmore Hickman,
Perennial Press, 1994, December 12 entry:

"...as we dwell in memory on our experiences with the one who is physically gone, his or her psychic presence, rather than being confined to the body we knew and loved, seems somehow to expand and surround us with its gentle understanding, its compassion and love.

So we enter upon different kinds of conversations, often exchanges without words. We seem to come to a mutual understanding and appreciation for the goodness and the difficulty we were in each other's life. We're able to smile...at all the flurry, and to relish, instead, the deep love and peace. Dear One, continue to be with me, as I will with you."

POST SCRIPT: I continue to have cardinals in my daily life since I wrote the redbird story in 2006, althogh nothing matches the splendor of the original display. Now, whenever I see a cardinal, I smile and think of her. If all this is in my imagination, well, God gave us imaginations, too. All I know is that seeing a redbird eases my pain and I am grateful for a beautiful reminder of my mother's love.

GHOST HUNTING

Top

Page Contents

A lot of material is available on the subject of ghost hunting, and as with most fascinating topics, not everyone is in agreement. Ghost hunting advice incorporates a broad range of approaches: everything from using strict scientific techniques, elaborate detection methods, and expensive equipment to automatic writing, seances, psychic ability and ouija boards.

Ghost hunting as a science includes the theoretical physics of space and time, the nature of matter and energy, the study of the mind-body connection and the possibility of psychic phenomena. Serious scientific ghost hunters use methodical investigation techniques based on objective data. They make distinctions between spirits, ghosts, imprints, poltergeists and ordinary, but unexplained, natural occurrences.

While some ghost hunters use special cameras and recording devices, and others rely solely on psychic ability, most searchers combine science, gut instincts, and/or intuition. The good news is that reputable ghost hunters agree on at least three things regardless of the methods: Be objective as possible, be informed, and offer only honest results. For the basics, click Ghost Hunting 101 from the links below.

Author John Kachuba offers this ghosthunting advice: Conduct your investigations with an open mind, but don't let yourself be fooled by the evidence. Interview your witnesses separately. Document your activities. Respect the site, and respect the privacy of your contacts. Above all, be a knowledgeable ghosthunter. (Ghosthunting Ohio, Haunted Heartland Series, Emmis Books, Cincinnati, Ohio, 2004, pages xi-xiii.)

In her wonderful book Ghost Hunter's Guide to Haunted Ohio, author Chris Woodyard writes:

"First rule of ghost hunting: Don't be gullible. Second rule: Don't be gullible. Third rule: Don't be gullible." (page 199, Kestral Publications, Dayton, Ohio, 2000)

Ms. Woodyard concludes that you need mental toughness, a huge amount of common sense, and a certain "sixth sense" to discern bogus claims of ghostly sightings. (page 199)

If you want to investigate ghosts, first ask yourself WHY you want to do it? Is it for curiosity, healing old wounds, assisting others, scientific inquiry, fantasy, or cheap thrill-seeking? Be clear on your motivations before contacting the Other Side. Please do not stir up something ghostly just for the hell of it, no pun intended.

Look for the most natural explanation first. It is usually the correct one. Does the basement need an exorcist or an exterminator? Street lights shimmering through rain, squirrels in the attic, tree branches swaying in the wind, and rusty hinges can all be misinterpreted as ghostly activity.

Whether you call it the supernatural or the paranormal, read everything you can on the subject because knowledge is power. But be careful, and protect yourself, because the energy is real. See my Number One Safety Tip and use your back button to return here.

Some experts advise us to stay away from reading about demons and dark forces, while others suggest we cannot protect ourselves from something unless we first understand it. I'm not going to advise you on your philosophical approach, or tell you what to study. We all come from a different frame of reference.

Regardless of your ghostly outlook, a few rules of safety apply. Use caution and common sense: People who come to you with demonic possession stories are usually very troubled souls. Often, but not always, the only demons present are the ones they grapple with in their own minds.

A working knowledge of psychology will help you differentiate fact from fantasy when someone has personal problems. Is he or she using the supernatural as an excuse to avoid emotional or psychological introspection, or worse, in place of treatment for an illness? Suggest professional counseling and let them go.

NUMBER ONE SAFETY TIP

Top

Page Contents

Attend to physical and spiritual wellness when ghost hunting. Don’t hunt ghosts when you are tired, ill, angry, depressed, hungry, or otherwise drained, because you may become a target for unpleasantness.

Nothing from the spirit world can harm us unless we first give permission. Compromised states, such as fatigue and illness, open the door. Pray according to your own spiritual tradition. Ask the God (or Goddess) of your understanding to protect and guide you in your work.

Trust your own good sense of the surroundings and act accordingly. Take a cell phone with you and don’t go alone. Let others know where you will be and when you plan to return. Be sure your car is in good condition and the gas tank is full.

Do not visit abandoned buildings. Their structures may not be sound, and you don't know who has taken up residence there. Never trespass on someone else's property, and call ahead to get permission from the owner to hunt ghosts. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Consider the following tragedy from Summer, 2006:

In Worthington, Ohio, near Columbus, four high school students decided to explore an old house, on a dare from friends, because they heard it was inhabited by ghosts. Unfortunately, the house was also inhabited by a flesh-and-blood owner and he shot one of the girls in the head with a rifle for trespassing. He told police he thought she was an intruder. It was after dark. I will write it again: Never trespass on private property for the thrill of hunting ghosts. It could cost you your life.

Ghost hunting is usually done at night, often in deserted places. Ghosts are just as apparent in the daytime. To increase safety, and decrease shadows, conduct your search during daylight hours.

I am more concerned with the malicious intent of human beings than I am with how a ghost might react to me. If an area doesn’t feel right--day or night--trust your instincts and get out. Not all threats are otherworldly.

COMMUNICATING WITH DECEASED LOVED ONES:

Start with the works of Allison DuBois, James Van Praagh, John Edward, Sylvia Browne, Echo Bodine and Hans Holzer. Some of their books carry recommended reading lists that will enlarge the scope of your search until you find the information that rings true with you. Trust that you will find what you need.

One final thought about finding books: Use any large online bookstore as a research tool. Type in key words such as ghosts, ghostbusting, afterlife, spirits, or an author's name, etc. and see what turns up. Read descriptions and reviews. Look in the New Age or Paranormal sections of libraries and bookstores. Sometimes, ghost stories that are specific to an area are found with the Local Interest books.
